Pumping power
The hydraulic ram is a fascinating, clever example of how water can be used. This special water pump works without the need for electricity. It uses the power of running water to operate.
This is where the ram comes into play:
- Water flows from a spring through the shock valve
- The flow of water is so strong that it immediately causes the valve to shut
- This increases the pressure in the pump, which causes a pressure valve to open briefly
- The water speeds up and is pumped upwards along a pipe
